Rapid Ammonia Nitrogen Compliance Project for an Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) Electronics Manufacturer

Solution:Conducted on-site Environmental Doctor Services and applied MicroMotion®-N,a biological agent composed of Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacterium and developed for the removal of ammonia nitrogen, to rapidly enhance the nitrification system.

Processing Scale:8000m³/d

Treatment Effect:Through process optimization and parameter adjustment, the nitrification system was successfully initiated and strengthened. Effluent ammonia nitrogen was reduced from 10–20 mg/L to below 0.1 mg/L, meeting the annual nitrogen discharge limit and achieving increased production and reduced emissions.

Characteristics

The enterprise discharges organic wastewater and stripping wastewater. The organic wastewater contains relatively low levels of COD and ammonia nitrogen, whereas the stripping wastewater has significantly higher concentrations of both total nitrogen and COD. Specifically, COD ranges from 1,000 to 1,100 mg/L, total nitrogen ranges from 105 to 150 mg/L, and ammonia nitrogen is below 5 mg/L, indicating a high organic nitrogen content. Thus, stripping wastewater is classified as medium-to-high concentration organic nitrogen wastewater.

Description

The on-site hardware and operational parameters indicated that the conversion rate of organic nitrogen was low, and the biological treatment unit for stripping wastewater showed incomplete organic nitrogen transformation. Investigations revealed that the second aerobic tank, which was originally intended for nitrification only, was also being used for organic nitrogen conversion, resulting in weakened nitrification performance and elevated ammonia nitrogen levels at the sedimentation tank outlet.

Due to high total nitrogen discharge levels, the plant needed to reduce the operating rate and production capacity of its process units to meet annual nitrogen discharge limits. Therefore, there was an urgent need to adopt low-carbon, green technologies that effectively reduce nitrogen concentrations.

Option

Our technical engineers conducted an on-site investigation, including water quality analysis and operational parameter assessment of the biological treatment units. Based on site-specific conditions, an Environmental Doctor Service plan was developed as follows:

(1) Activated additional aeration blowers to increase dissolved oxygen concentrations.

(2) Dosed sodium carbonate to replenish alkalinity.

(3) Introduced MicroMotion®-N.

When dissolved oxygen and alkalinity were sufficient, the population of nitrifying bacteria became the key factor for effective nitrification. Therefore, MicroMotion®-N (nitrification bio-enhancer) was applied in four separate doses to help the system rapidly recover and stabilize its nitrification capacity.

Result

Following the introduction of MicroMotion®-N, a significant reduction in effluent ammonia nitrogen was observed within 1 day. By day 3, ammonia nitrogen levels had decreased to ≤1 mg/L.
